Linux server update

You might have noticed already, the Linux homeserver project is not updated for a very long time. The original setup was based on Slackware 14.0 and some parts were updated to version 14.1. Version 14.2 is already released a long time ago, and a next version will be announced anytime now. Well, within a year “when it’s ready” of course.

I will leave that project as it is now, it doesn’t look like my own setup anymore, I just keep it as a reference so you can borrow some ideas from it.

Site speed and updates

The site became slow again, nothing new. This time it was caused by the nextgen gallery plugin. The 2.xx series had new features that causes the slowdown. In the meantime, there is a fork made from the latest pre 2.xx code called nextcellent gallery. This is almost a drop in replacement, so it is easy to “downgrade” the gallery.

In another post I wrote about a new download plugin, today I removed it. I am using an external site again. One of the missing things with an external site (nginx with autoindex) was that it didn’t produce data for piwik. Today I found out that there is a new experimental feature that can do logfile analyses. This works and now every hour a cron job runs that tool.

Happy New Year and some updates

First of all, a happy new year to all our readers. The site has now a facebook page, so FB users can now more easy follow a number of changes on this site. Use the like buttons or the button in the header to go there.

Syslinux boot

Syslinux boot

The reworking of the existing articles from Arch Linux into Slackware Linux is making good progress. It’s a good opportunity to make some articles more or less distribution independent.

Today I wrote a new article to finish the basic system installation using syslinux as boot loader and so that the basic installation is now a more complete story.

New monitoring articles.

I have been using OSSEC for a few months already, but the article about this had to wait such a long time because of the tuning and adjusting I did in all these months. But now it’s ready to show how to install it on the home server project.

Another article that was on the waiting list is about system monitoring in general, and some choices that can be made. In fact this article is nothing more then a few notes about programs I have been using and still are using to monitor servers.

Since a week we have warm weather (for this time of the year) which inspired the author of a related site to write a terrace thermometer (in dutch, but google translate can fix that).
